Introduction:
Ahom revivalism in Assam and the rise of the Sukhothai Kingdom from the influence of the Khmer Empire reflect a similar historical pattern of identity reassertion after periods of cultural absorption. In the case of Ahom revivalism, there is a conscious effort by sections of the community to rediscover and promote Tai-Ahom language, scripts, and traditional practices that had gradually diminished due to centuries of integration into caste Assamese society with origins in north and central India.
Likewise, the emergence of Sukhothai represented a deliberate move by Tai groups to distance themselves from Khmer political and cultural dominance and establish their own distinct identity, including the development of a separate script and cultural framework. Both cases arise from a sense that original identity was being overshadowed, leading to organized efforts whether through modern cultural movements or medieval state building to reclaim heritage and assert uniqueness.
At the same time, neither process involves complete rejection of external influences, Ahom revivalism continues to exist within the larger Assamese cultural space, unlike the Sukhothai that completely got rid elements of Khmer governance and religion while reshaping them into a uniquely Thai form.
What Ahoms can learn from Bodos:
The Ahom revivalist is leaning towards domination of the modern Assamese identity rather than growing it on its own like how Bodos the civilisation creators of Kamrubu which has a huge influence over what we call Assamese identity. The Bodo Kacharis especially of Sadiyal group have a great influence on the Phulam Gamusa or the common red white Gamusa, still Bodos didnt cling on it and didnt fight with the present users of it as it is both tiring and useless instead they popularised their own Aronai which made them separate from rest. Modern Ahom revivalists especially on internet keep on fighting with the so-called "Kalars" on petty issues not understanding that they cant change their opinion by facts, insults, hate or debunking them or any other way.
One has to realise that instead of wasting time on proving to your dislikers you need to prove your culture, your language and ignore them completely.
