The Scam of Ahom Revivalism

Ahom Buddhist Society and Moung Dun Shun Kham Monastery

It is a well known fact that Ahoms were never Buddhist and almost no Hindu or Buddhist influence can be found in Ahom religion (John M'Cosh 1837:20). Ahoms used to eat cows, and worship a creator-god (phâ-têr-tsērng) to the horror of both Hindus and Buddhists, former who used to worship cow and latter who rejected the very idea of God. But still if some Ahoms wish to convert to Buddhism like the mainstream Tais then we cannot really stop them too. Unless, they are doing it not for any love of Buddha but purely for monetary benefits and siphon off funds from Buddhist countries in their own pockets.

Atleast this is what happened in the case of Lakwa monastery or more stylishly known as the "Royal Moung Dun Shun Kham Monastery" or "Wat-Pha Thai Ahom." The president of Ahom Buddha Sangha, Mr. Kamala Rajkonwar himself personally took several donations (undisclosed but I believe it is to the tune of lakhs) for this monastery as well as millions of bahts from the Royal Thai Government.

The construction started in January 2019 and it took 5 years to finally build the monastery by 2024. Of course we understand, Covid happened so they couldn't finish it on time and had absolutely "no intention" of purposefully delaying the construction to siphon off more funds from Thailand. But what did the monastery end up looking like in the end? A literal hut, that anyone can build on their own and in no less than six months, at no more than few lakhs rupees for the cement and steel. So what construction work was going on for 5 years and what donations did they require to build such a "grand" monastery that they even took funds from Thailand?

Siphoning of funds under Act-East Policy

Thi Nani Gopal Mahanta was the same person who made Mae Dam Mae Phi a restricted holiday in Guwahati colleges misusing his power as GUVC. I also attach a newspaper clipping detailing how these people siphon off funds meant for South-East Asian studies while having absolutely no qualification to even conduct these studies in the first place (esp. Sangeeta Gogoi and Medini Mohan Gogoi)

Misuse of Ahom Revivalism funds to construct Namghars

Perhaps this is the most serious issue of all. How an important sum of 15 lakhs solely meant for Ahom revivalism was spent in building namghars (caste hindu religous place of worship). Ahom Revivalists often cite "lack of funds" behind their incompetence but incidents like this prove even when these people are given appropriate funds they will waste it on useless activity only.
